Accessibility statement and commitment to accessibility

Salsa Digital is committed to ensuring digital accessibility for people with disabilities and to creating an inclusive environment. We are continually improving the user experience for everyone, and our goal is to be fully conformant with WCAG 2.1 AA standards in the future.

Measures to support accessibility

Salsa Digital takes the following measures to ensure accessibility of the Salsa Digital website and to educate the public on accessibility:

  • Include accessibility as part of our core values of rigour, accountability, transparency, and diversity. We have added an accessibility consultant to our staff to ensure we are incorporating best practices into all areas of our project lifecycle. We are also holding ourselves accountable to continue learning more about accessibility best practices, are transparent about what we still need to learn, and are promoting diversity by acknowledging that everyone — people with disabilities and those without disabilities — deserve to have an equivalent experience on the web.

  • Produce educational materials such as blogs, videos and webinars

  • Contribute accessible code to the community

  • Constantly learn by attending conference sessions, accessibility webinars and monthly meetups, such as A11yTalksExternal Link

In addition, we are also in the process of taking the following measures:

  • Creating an internal accessibility policy

  • Creating accessibility training for our staff via presentations and via quarterly engagement manager meetings

  • Creating a strategy to partner with others to create an accessibility centre of excellence

Conformance status

The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) defines requirements for designers and developers to improve accessibility for people with disabilities. The Salsa Digital website is partially conformant with WCAG 2.1 level AA. Partially conformant means that some parts of the content do not fully conform to the accessibility standard.

The major areas that are known not to conform are as follows:

  1. The homepage and all internal pages using tabpanels (e.g. Purpose, Expertise, Services Catalogue, individual services pages, News and Events, individual team member pages) have content that is set to aria-hidden=true, which means the majority of the content in each tabpanel is not read to screen reader users.

  2. Search results page: The screen reader reads “Select a Topic Button” but does not indicate that there are elements listed in a dropdown underneath.

  3. Pages with tables: Tables not set up to allow for screen readers to read the content and provide context for users.

  4. Services Catalogue: A keyboard user can activate the Service Categories button and can tab to each taxonomy term but cannot activate the terms. However, if a user clicks on Shift+Tab to get back to the filters, they can select some of the additional taxonomy terms.

  5. All pages: The Skip to Main Content block skips non-repetitive content that users may need for context or that provides valuable information.

  6. Error messages state that “This field is required” but do not give the user context as to what field is being referred to.

  7. When content is updated due to selecting a new page within pagination or when a form has been submitted, the content does not receive screen reader focus, and screen reader users may not be informed that there is a new live region available.

  8. When content is set to WCAG 2.1 text spacing standards, most content within the cards is cut off and is unavailable for users.
