The purpose

To help the Judicial College of Victoria keep judicial officers up to date with developments in law and social issues.

The players

The Judicial College of Victoria offers education for judges, magistrates and VCAT members, keeping judicial officers up to date with developments in law and social issues, helping them improve and maintain the knowledge they need to thrive in their roles.

The problem

The Judicial Officers Information Network (JOIN) is an online resource for judicial officers and their support staff. JOIN ensures judicial officers have access to legislation, judgments, publications including benchbooks and manuals, sentencing statistics and legal reference material. JOIN was battling various challenges, including:

  • Expensive to maintain - digital content was managed manually using legacy technology
  • Hard to use - the content was difficult to search and organise
  • Poor uptake - users were not utilising the tool - was too hard to use

Design

Salsa assisted JCV to build an Intranet to support judges, magistrates and VCAT members. The design of the system was based heavily around access to a large quantity of documents, and particular filtering and search capabilities required by the users. The new tool provided:

  • Files database
  • Simple and advanced content searching
  • Filtering
  • The ability to 'send' pages to other users
  • Personalisation
  • Discussion boards

Engineering

JOIN uses the Drupal CMS platform, Salsa helped build Single Sign On (SSO) integration with legacy systems within the department to create a seamless application which has dramatically increased user participation and resolved the aforementioned challenges.

The project has helped JCV reach their goals, and is actively used and enjoyed by the community.
